Roe vs. Wade Must End

The biggest crisis going on in our country today is not the war we’re fighting in Iraq or the deeply established racism; it’s the crimes we’re allowing to be committed against our own flesh and blood, legalized abortion. There were approximately 1.37 million abortions in 1996 alone. Simple put, it’s way past time for the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision to be overturned. Not only is legalized abortion an invasion of the unborn babies’ right to life, but it’s an invasion against the innocent, those who clearly can’t stand up for themselves.

Even though I don’t think I will ever be able to truly understand the position mothers whom choose abortion are put in, I believe that legalized abortion must stop. I agree with the new South Dakota proposed ban which exempts rape, incest, and the health of the mother. These are all reasonable, moral predicaments which the right of privacy of the mother should be protected. Not like the excessive amount of abortions that are nonchalantly being performed today despite the clear invasion of the right to life of the baby.

In today’s society there are abundant methods of birth control that sexually active women have the choice to use. I believe that it’s more than irresponsible for them pass up these options if they are not ready to have a child. Abortion has to stop being used as a means of birth control. This is because it is simply not. It is the killing of a child, unborn or not, which does not constitute as the typical meaning of birth control, but more like life control. Individuals with the help of the current law have to be held accountable for the outright slaughter of their own young.

In the post by my colleague titled Roe vs. Wade Must End, the author was against abortion except for in situations such as rape, incest and the health of the mother. I am in complete agreement with this post. I have also researched this topic and I found a statistics page on abortion which reported that 1% of all abortions occur because of rape or incest; 6% of abortions occur because of potential health problems regarding either the mother or child, and 93% of all abortions occur for social reasons (i.e. the child is unwanted or inconvenient).. With that said I believe most women are not willing to deal with the consequences of their own actions. It is not a rare case for women to get pregnant after being sexually active. They knew they might get pregnant, but decided to be irresponsible anyway. The other side of abortion is that, not only does it murder the life inside of the mom, but it also endangers the life of the mother. I knew a woman who had two abortions and was told she would probably never be able to have children after that. That is not sad to me because I think someone who destroys the life inside of them should never have the privilege to carry another life again, but I am just trying to tell of the harm that is done to women's bodies when an abortion is done. I hope that one day abortion will be illegal, but it seems like our government is so concerned about rights that pretty soon it is going to be a citizen's rights to do whatever they please. I feel that the government is always giving people a way out to where they do not have to face all the consequences. If one knows they are going to have to face the consequences and there is no way out, then they would be less likely to commit the actions in the first place.

I am writing in response to my classmate’s blog of April 25, 2008, Roe vs. Wade must end. I could not agree more with your writing. The statistics are overwhelming. There are approximately 3700 abortions performed daily in the United States. More than half of the abortions, 52%, are from women that are under the age of 25 and 20% of those are teenagers. In the United States there were 839,226 legal abortions reported in 2004. This was a drop from the 848,163 legal abortions reported in 2003. That adds up to 1,687,389 lives that were done away with in a two year period. You can see the baby’s heart beating on ultrasound, seven weeks after conception. The heartbeat can be heard as early as nine to ten weeks. Why is human life treated so lightly, and groups of people (P.E.T.A.) get all worked up over issues like horse racing.

Human life is precious from conception until natural death. I can’t imagine what a scared teenager or young woman is going through when an unwanted pregnancy happens. Abortion MUST not be used as birth control. These young women have to be made aware of the alternative to abortion---adoption. There are thousands of couples that can’t have children. By giving the baby up for adoption, you are giving the greatest gift of all to a couple whose dream was a baby to love.

If Roe vs. Wade is ever going to be overturned, we are going to have to have judges on the Supreme Court that will vote in that matter. There is a chance that at least two judges could retire during the next presidential term, John Paul Stevens age 88 and Ruth Ginsburg age 75. If you are against this unthinkable way of ending a human life, I urge you to find out what your presidential candidates stance is on this issue. The new president will be the one to nominate the new justices.

I am definitely in agreement with the post by my classmate titled Roe vs Wade Must End. I too agree that abortion should be illegal except in certain extreme situations. These extreme situations can be due to rape, incest or a potential health risk to the mother. So I am 100% in agreement with this post. Being a mother myself I do not understand how someone can do this just because they were irresponsible. I believe if someone feels mature enough and old enough to have sex then they need to be able to deal with the consequences. At least just be responsible if you don't want a kid. There are many times of birth control methods out. Plenty of people in this world want a baby and can't have one, so it is really sad knowing some precious life is taken away when it could be with someone that would love them. Abortion is not a type of birth control. Something needs to be done to stop this from happening.
